About the Regime

Today, Georgia is governed by an oligarch, Bidzina Ivanishvili, together with his party, Georgian Dream. Georgian Dream has captured all of Georgia's state institutions over the period of 13 years, and in 2024, it rigged elections, which have not been judged as either free or fair by any international or local observer mission. According to the local observing issues, the elections couldn't have been deemed as valid; consequently, the Georgian society demands new, free, and fair parliamentary elections.

On November 28, 2024, Georgian Dream PM Irakli Kobakhidze made a statement announcing the suspension of Georgia's Eurointegration process. This statement resulted in a massive, ongoing daily protest that has lasted longer than a year. The governing party responds with unprecedented police violence, with more than 300 people tortured, 124 people still illegally in jails, and with an illegal chemical agent used to poison protesters. The regime has also implemented various laws that restrict freedom of expression and assembly, effectively attempting to outlaw protests.

Nevertheless, thanks to the ongoing effort of the civil society and the resistance movement, the regime is facing international isolation, internal struggles for power, and severe sanctions from the world's democratic countries. The resistance continues for as long as necessary to reach the release of all political prisoners and scheduling of new, free and fair parliamentary elections.

Systemic Torture

The regime has tortured hundreds of people in an attempt to stop the protest, but the resistance is ongoing.
